Eurail Group’s Rail Passes give travellers freedom to discover Europe

Already part of a recognised and well-respected brand, Eurail Group’s products are widely regarded as the best rail passes in Europe, providing the greatest flexibility over the widest range of options. Today, Eurail and its InterRail brand Passes offer unlimited travel in one to 30 countries, for periods of three days up to three months, in different combinations that empower travellers more than any other form of travel.

The mission of the Eurail Group GIE, based in Utrecht, the Netherlands, is to create, manage and market European rail passes on behalf of its member railway and shipping companies, as well as promoting the benefits of rail travel. The company manages two brands: Eurail and InterRail. The Eurail Group was established in 2001 as an organisation dedicated to the marketing and management of the Eurail Pass (aimed at the non-European market), which, since 1959, had been jointly managed as a co-operative effort by a number of train and shipping companies. In April 2007, the Eurail Group expanded its scope, taking on the management of the InterRail Pass range (aimed at the European market).

People who have been living in Europe for six months or longer are entitled to purchase an InterRail Pass. Otherwise, a Eurail Pass can be bought by non-European residents. Thanks to Eurail Group’s wide distribution network of sales agents and local railway companies, European rail passes are accessible to everybody across the globe. As well as offering rail travel, the Group also has many “bonus partners”, including hotels, transport companies and museums. These partners give added value to the pass, offering their services at either a reduced rate or free of charge to rail pass holders.

The two rail pass product lines, designed to facilitate easy travel and mobility within Europe, are a proven success. Last year, over 540,000 passengers travelled on a Eurail or InterRail Pass, demonstrating that rail travel remains one of the most favoured ways to discover Europe. Young travellers and students make up a large proportion of Eurail Group’s customers, having a keen interest in new experiences and different cultures, coupled with the time in between study to explore the countries surrounding them. InterRail and Eurail Passes give these travellers the opportunity to travel flexibly throughout Europe.

Rail travel is relaxing yet invigorating, enabling passengers to enjoy the diverse landscapes, cultures and sights that Europe offers, as well as meeting locals. Europe’s rail system is modern and reliable, and crossborder rail connections are excellent. The rail network on the European continent alone covers over 160,000 miles of track, giving travellers the scope to travel practically anywhere they want. Whether the destination is a historic monument, a beautiful coastline, the tranquil countryside or a buzzing major city, rail passes make it all possible, allowing travellers to be spontaneous – jumping on to the next train on a whim.

Eurail Group’s Marketing Manager, Ana Dias e Seixas, explains: “Our rail passes empower our customers to discover Europe at their own pace, in their own unique way. Not only do we provide a cost-efficient, flexible and comfortable means of transportation, rail is also recognised as the more environmentally-friendly way to travel.”

Mrs Dias adds, “Our customers don’t just want to see Europe; they want to experience Europe, to enjoy sharing, savouring and telling stories of their Europe. A good conversation can often result in the most rewarding rail travel journey.” Wherever you go in Europe, the Eurail Group promises a unique experience and an adventure, which will be cherished forever.
