Matthew Boulton College of Further and Higher Education in the heart of Birmingham is a lively, cosmopolitan college with long-established links to all local universities and providers of specialist education in the region. We will steer you through your choice of subject – whether A levels, HNC/D’s, Access and Foundation Degrees – and give you expert guidance on your chosen career, while you enjoy student life in the UK’s “Second City”. We are easy to find and the college is within walking distance of the vibrant city centre and only minutes away from all major travel networks, including coach, rail and air.
Proven track record
Founded in 1893, the College has provided high-quality education to its students for over 100 years. Industrial engineering courses sealed the College’s practical and academic standing at the turn of the century – a reputation that sees the College currently established as a centre of excellence. In the 100 years since the College came into existence, the curriculum has expanded and we now offer a wide range of general academic and vocational programmes, including Computing and Information Technology, Engineering and Electronics, Vocational and Environmental Science, Music and Performing Arts and English Language.
We are also a Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) with specialist courses in Print, Media and Graphics, Medical and Health Care, Business Management and Retail and Professional Studies. The recently- built new college, which is part of Aston University’s “Eastside Learning Zone”, boasts several “Resource-based Learning Centres”, which are fully equipped with the latest computers and private study areas. Those taking up our courses learn in stateof- the-art laboratories tailor-made to your specialist subject, for example dental technology, nursing and pharmacy. For those with a more artistic side, our newly-created theatre and performing arts centre is the ideal “platform” to develop creative skills.
International visitors
The College has a long history of welcoming international students. Students from all over the world choose to study with us because our “state-of-the-art” learning facilities are among the best the city of Birmingham has to offer. We greatly value the benefits international students bring to the College and the city and want you to gain the very best from your time here. We know that relocating to another country can be stressful, so we make that move simpler by helping with your admission and enrolment, visa renewal and accommodation.
We place international students with host families who are specially trained to help new arrivals to the city settle in. Students can also be housed on the Aston University campus, or private apartments are very popular for those who prefer independent living arrangements. We have a comprehensive support system that ensures that from the moment you arrive, we will be there to guide and support all our international students with an orientation programme that meets your individual needs.
Get the most out of your stay
Birmingham has much to offer students from all walks of life. It is a lively, multi-cultural city with a busy nightlife, boasting award-winning restaurants, clubs and museums. It is also host to the internationallyacclaimed Exhibition and Convention Centres and Symphony Hall, and has the widest network of canals outside of Venice. Whatever your interest is, be it the Birmingham Ballet or trying a local “balti” (curry) the city has it all. If you don’t know where to start, our college “enrichment programme” can guide you. It provides an opportunity to meet other students and participate in exciting activities of your choice. As part of your college experience, there are regular organised sightseeing trips and sporting events, as well as frequent excursions further afield to London, Oxford and Alton Towers. The College organises a very successful annual International Festival where students from all over the world come together to celebrate with a wonderful mixture of food, music and entertainment.
