Bishop Grosseteste University College prepares its students to be the very best

Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln has been offering high-quality teacher education since 1862. It is one of the most experienced institutions at offering teacher education in the UK. Formally a church college, it now draws on these traditions to offer students a unique experience in a supportive community, where the emphasis is on learning and growing together.

The University College has a national and international reputation that is partly a result of the high quality of staff and student interaction. Although still associated with the Anglican Church, the University College welcomes those of faith or of none. This creates a diverse community with an emphasis on mutual respect. Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln is set on an 18-acre site in the attractive Uphill area of Lincoln, just a 10‑minute walk from the historic city centre.

The campus consists of a range of modern learning and teaching buildings that are surrounded by some of the most historic architecture in Lincoln. This contributes to making Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln a very special place to study. Recreational life on campus is enhanced by the dedicated Students’ Union buildings, a student common room and a Sport and Fitness Centre, as well as the excellent music and drama resources.

The University College has a range of modern and well-equipped teaching and learning facilities. The library is well stocked, with access to a wide range of IT equipment, journals and school-based resources. There is a variety of lecture and seminar spaces, each equipped with the latest technology to support learning. The University College also gives an undertaking to find accommodation for all international students. This could be in the single-room halls of residence or in one of the wide range of available properties that are located near to the campus.

The City of Lincoln was founded in Roman times and evidence still exists of the thriving settlements that have existed here since then. It is recognised as one of the most attractive historical cities in the UK, with several distinct areas. The “Uphill” part of the city contains the castle, cathedral and the city’s cultural quarter, of which the University College is part. The “Downhill” area contains a mix of modern architecture and the older, more historic buildings, together with the shopping area. Lincoln enjoys a rich blend of cultural activities and a vibrant night life, so international students will always be able to find something to their taste. There are two theatres, a number of galleries and cultural venues. and a range of places to eat. There is ample accommodation available for guests in the city’s hotels and guest houses, and it is easily accessible from the UK’s airports and motorways.

The University College is organised into two schools. The School of Culture, Education and Innovation focuses on undergraduate degrees, with an emphasis on the liberal arts and the undergraduate study of education as an academic discipline. Education Studies can be taken with a combination of a range of subjects, including Mathematics, Science, English and History. Further details can be found on our website. The second of our schools is the School of Teacher Development. It is here that our range of Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) courses can be found. We also offer an undergraduate three-year degree in Primary Teaching.

The PGCE courses are offered in the areas of primary and secondary education. Each student must train for two Key Stages. The Primary Course focuses on Nursery, Key Stage One and Two (Children who are aged 3-11). The Secondary programmes concentrate on preparing students to teach children who are aged between 11 and 19. Secondary PGCEs are offered in a range of subjects. These include Mathematics, English with Drama, Music, Religious Education and Science. All PGCE courses contain a mixture of lecture, seminar and tutorial-based activities which support time spent learning to teach in the classroom during school placement. The emphasis is on the practical preparation to be a teacher. To that end students are provided with an individual tutor and a school-based mentor who work together to ensure that students are able to make the most of the opportunities. Assessment is through a range of methods, these include written assignments and presentations.

A significant feature of the PGCE courses at Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln is the opportunity to earn credits towards a Masters degree. These will enable students who wish to do so to earn the remaining credits part-time while working as a teacher.

For entry to a PGCE course at Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln, students must possess a good honours degree from a recognised institutions and have attained a IELTS Level of 6.5. Fees for the Year 2008/9 will be £7,725 for all courses.
