Undergraduate programmes

BSc in Psychology is offered as either a single honours degree course or as a major or minor option in combination with other University of Buckingham degree programmes.

Psychology has become an extremely popular area for undergraduate study in the UK with classes in some universities of hundreds. At Buckingham, the high staff: student ratio ensures no-one gets lost in the crowd. The programme covers all the core areas of psychological theory as well as popular applied courses in areas, such as the psychology of crime, counselling and neuroscience.

The two-year intense programme is also designed to prepare students for undertaking the British Psychology Society in-house examinations to obtain the British Psychology Society Graduate Basis for Registration.

BSc in Computing is a single honours course providing up-to-date knowledge of information and communication technologies at an advanced level, teaches programming and database skills, data mining and its use in e-commerce and e-business and building on research strengths in biometrics, wireless technologies, image processing, cryptography and authentication.

BSc in Psycho-Informatics is a combination of psychology and computing that is designed to provide graduates with a sound understanding of computing and its applications in psychological science. Graduates will cover the core components of a psychology degree, but also important and relevant aspects of computing, such as data mining and programming that are vital for contemporary science researchers. This degree will mean that Psycho-Informatics graduates will enter the workplace with traditionally-valued psychology graduate skills, such as being able to design research projects, analyse results, produce research reports and have a good understanding of people and also up-to-date computing skills that are increasingly vital for posts within contemporary knowledgebased economies.

Postgraduate taught programmes

Certificate in Computing is a six-month intensive conversion course intended for graduates who come from a non-computing background.

Postgraduate Diploma in Computing is a nine-month or 12-month programme for graduates from a non-computing background too, but with flexibility and more choices. A part-time version of the programme is also available.

MSc in Innovative Computing is a one-year course for holders of a first degree in computing or a related discipline. It allows students opportunities for in-depth study in:

  • secure mobile and wireless communications;
  • biometrics and authentication;
  • data mining and knowledge discovery;
  • imaging techniques and applications.

MSc in Molecular Basis of Chronic Disease provides specialist knowledge and understanding of the molecular basis of chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, respiratory diseases, such as asthma, and diseases of the central nervous system, such as anxiety, depression, Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia.

MSc in Drug Discovery and Development provides a knowledge and understanding of the drug discovery and development process and includes courses on target selection and validation, in silico and in vitro high-throughput screening, lead generation and optimisation, proof-ofconcept studies in animal models, in silico, in vitro and in vivo drug absorption, metabolism, excretion and toxicology, regulatory affairs and translational clinical studies.

MSc in Bioinformatics involves collaboration between the Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolic Disease research group and the Department of Applied Computing and provides intensive training in software development, database technologies and molecular genetics and is suitable for graduates with either biological or computing backgrounds.

  • music psychology
  • problem solving
  • children’s science learning
  • evolutionary psychology
  • dyslexia and specific learning difficulties.

The Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolic Research department has international standing as a centre for pioneering research on new molecular targets for treatments for obesity and diabetes.

The University

The University offers a garden campus in a market town within easy reach of Heathrow Airport, Oxford and the lively, modern city of Milton Keynes. Its total student population is around 1,000, with 450 accommodation places available in on-campus halls of residence with free wireless internet access, car parking and CCTV for added security.
